Do you like the look of photos, books and other knick-knacks arranged on a table, just so? Maybe they were haphazardly strewn there, creating the perfect lived-in look. Yet, they are displayed so deliberately that they must have been placed there on purpose.
Home style icons like Pottery Barn have perfected this look, but you can do it yourself in your own home -- easily, quickly and using items you already have in your home.
I used this picture
from the Pottery Barn online catalog
as inspiration to create a couple of different looks.
What appeared to me was almost like a formula:
candles + books + photos + miscellaneous knick-knacks = perfect side table display
So I put the formula to work.
In my first arrangement, I used crystal candle-holders like PB did, and added some books in a similar fashion to theirs. I chose matched frames as opposed to PB's contrasting styles, simply because that is what I had in my house. I added a somewhat campy German Shepherd mini-snowglobe to mimic the roundness of PB's stone globe and voila!
Still using the "formula," I switched to a single candle in an antiqued metal holder, and added an urn in a contrasting antiqued metal. Building on the stone theme in the PB display, I borrowed my son's bag of rocks he purchased at a recent museum visit and allowed them to "haphazardly" spill from the purple velvet bag.
I created both of these displays in a matter of minutes with the things I had in my living room. It was almost too easy ... watch out Pottery Barn
