Recycling yoga mats
Last night as I lay in the savasana pose sweating and wanting to die on my yoga mat during class, I looked at my soaked mat and wondered just how much abuse the poor thing could take. One thought lead to another, as tends to happen when you think you might expire from the camel pose, and I began to wonder just when do you throw in the towel, or mat in this case, and start fresh.
That lead me to wondering what I would actually do with my old yoga mat. Not a soul in my family would deign to set foot upon it, it is ugly and they all know I do nothing but sweat and groan on it.
It turns out I am not the only one pondering this dilemma. There is an entire site devoted to the numerous ways a yoga mat can find new life. My favorites are:
- Give your yoga mat a new life as a weed cloth cover. If you just have one smallish sized flower bed or several small spaces that require some weed control, a yoga mat makes a perfect weed barrier. Plus, after being soaked with sweat not weed will want to come near it. Very effective.
- Cut your pad into smaller pieces, tape them together with duct tape and you have created a fabulous knee pad for the garden.
- For those of us who are soccer moms, a yoga pad would be put to great use for watching soccer games. A mat is more portable than the traditional soccer mom chairs and seats several bottoms.
- A cut up yoga mat makes for great padding when packing up breakables like vases or precious Christmas ornaments.
