There's something about eating outside that just makes food taste better. And when the food is great to begin with and the setting is a natural wonder, well, then you've got yourself a little slice of heaven.

That being said, eating outside takes a little work. Most of the time you can't find the candles, the picnic blanket, the plates or the plastic wine glasses. So what is suppose to be fun usually turns into a stressful-pull-your-hair-out Saturday afternoon.

This summer, organize like a pro and tuck everything into a portable container (preferably the picnic basket ) and park it near the door or in your pantry. You'll never have to waste time hunting for anything again.

Here is what's in my picnic basket:
  1. A blanket or table cloth that is big enough for everyone to sit on with your picnic basket
  2. 2 to 4 sets of plates, cups and utensils - in this case I would use plastic reusable items that you keep rather than the disposable kind. It's nicer and disposable plastic isn't really that good for the environment. Plus, lively plates, flatware and cloth or paper napkins can make even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches look like a gourmet feast.
  3. Mosquito repellent and sunscreen (things I'm sure you weren't thinking of but will probably need.)
  4. Cloth napkins and place mats.
  5. If you drink alcohol, pack a corkscrew for wine (don't forget a bottle stopper) and have a bottle opener for beer that may not be twist off.
  6. Wet wipes to clean hands and faces and plastic baggies to put leftovers in. I always include a trash bag as well.
  7. Tooth picks, cutting board and cheese knife along with salt and pepper shakers, make sure they are filled.
  8. Candles or incense (and matches.)
  9. A deck of cards or a small travel game.
  10. Don't forget to add your favorite tunes – burn a CD or fill your iPod with your favorites that complement the mood you're trying to set – romantic, soothing or festive.
If you always have your basket packed with the right supplies you'll be ready to celebrate – any time, any place. Just add nutritious food and your beverages!!

As an extra added touch you can include a journal in your basket to keep a record of your favorite picnic memories or tuck away a small vase and a bottle of water. Pick flowers in the wild or bring some from the nearest grocery for instant ambiance!
