Revive a soggy cell phone

This summer I have given my kids a cell phone of their own. It was a huge step for us and not one I did without doubts or fears. After all, what are the chances that my 14 and 10 year-old will be able to keep a cell phone without hurting it, losing it, running up the minutes? Very slim.

Within a few days of our new, sassy phone arriving in the mail, it took a ride in the washing machine. I was able to get to it quickly, remove the battery and let it quietly dry for several days. After about three days we inserted the battery, turned on the phone and all was well. But if you happen to run your phone through the warm cycle, here are a few tips that can help breathe life into your soggy phone:

  • Shake off the excess water and then place your phone in a bowl of rice. The rice absorbs the water and your phone just might return to the land of the living.
  • If your phone swims in the ocean or a swimming pool, rinse it with clean water, gently blow the air out and then bake it at 125 degrees for 5 hours. This method obviously has its risks and should only be considered as a last resort.
  • Soak your wet phone in an alcohol mixture and let dry for several days.

I have to admit that I lean towards the tried and true method of simply drying out a wet phone or placing it in a bowl of rice. The others seem a bit risky to me. Have you had a wet cell phone? If so, how did you fix it?

Just remember to take the battery out before baking it!
