As is the case with most teenagers these days, my 14 year-old son Loren is far more technically clever than I can ever dream of being. Not only is he quickly becoming my source of Mac tech support, but he is also a talented videographer, sure I say that partly because I am his mother but mostly because he devotes most of his time to it.

Recently he has been yammering to me that he needs a handle for his video camera, but unfortunately his camera model does not have a handle. This discussion lead to the fact that he needed a much more expensive camera that sported a handle. I nixed that wish and told him to get creative. He did a little research and came up with a plan: a handle that would not only fit his camera, but one that he could make on his own and for far less than the price of a new camera.

The supplies were easy to find and well within our budget of $10. We went to the local hardware store and bought:
  • A 3 foot length of 1/4 by 1 inch aluminum strip
  • One 1/4 inch bolt
  • One 1/4 inch wing nut
  • One washer
We asked one of the employees to cut us a length of 18 1/2 inches from the aluminum strip that would fit Loren's camera. Upon returning home, Loren drilled a 1/4 hole in one end of the cut aluminum strip and then bent it to fit around his camera. He then bolted the end to the bottom of his camera and covered the handle end in black, electrical tape.

For under $10, $7.38 to be precise, Loren has a new handle and I didn't have to fork over the high price of a new one. Not a bad project in my book.
