I was surfing around the Internet and I was intrigued by a picture of
Paris Hilton carrying a laptop computer which was wrapped in a quilted pink Sumo laptop sleeve. I thought, "Hey wait a second, quilted pink? That's not the style for the Paris Hilton we've all come to know and love!" I can accept the pink color all right but quilted? I'd expect Paris to be sporting patent leather with studs, or something of that nature. Then I realized that it was a picture of the new, improved and "rehabilitated" Paris Hilton and it all made sense.
Here is a better solution for dressing your laptop than to have to drop $35 on a pink quilted laptop sleeve that your grandma could have made in an hour while talking on her cell phone. Here are some hand-made, high quality and trend setting laptop sleeve and cover ideas.
The
this mom sews blog provided me with a couple nice ideas. First, the writer kindly provides us passage to Red Maloo where you'll find a nice selection of quality (although expensive) sleeves, covers and pouches for any number of electronic gadgets. However, for us hard core handy people, she also provides
this cool Simplicity sewing pattern combo which will not only help you create a cover for your laptop but will aid you in making covers for your iPod, iPhone, and Blackberry as well as a tote bag to throw them all in together. You could even consider making these covers in bulk and then selling them on sites like
Etsy or
HiBidder.
I found a really easy to understand step by step tutorial by Alex which describes exactly how "Joe Average" can make himself a laptop sleeve for under $5.
Alex takes you from start to finish with pictures and descriptions in a down to earth, real people style. It's refreshing to read a "sewing" project from a guy's perspective. Alex does a real nice job of presenting this one.
Here's a more in depth look at
illustrated instructions for making a laptop sleeve with pictures provided by
Instructables. The process is spelled out in careful detail with lots of pictures and the results look quite nice.
For all those people who look for the absolute simplest way to get every task done, take a look at this
"dumpster diver" laptop cover idea. Yeah, it's cheap and it's ugly but heck, it gets the job done! Besides, it looks like one of the most protective cover ideas I ran across and you wouldn't be out much money if you accidentally forgot and left it somewhere.
So, now you have a nice selection of ideas to get you started. Remember also that if all else fails, there are always a million uses for
duct tape and I'm sure that making a laptop cover is one of them. Use your imagination and apply liberal amounts of your own style. By the time you're ready to go back to school, I'm sure you can make a laptop cover that will be the envy of everyone!
