Help your kids succeed in learning

Every parent wants to have a child who is successful in school. Not only is it a deep parental wish but it is also good for a child's self-esteem to be able to excel in school. Some kids are self starters and seem to know from the moment they enter a classroom just what it is they need to do to make it to the top of their class.

Other kids need a more guidance in order to find their way. Sharon and Craig Ramey, both Ph.D. professors at Georgetown, have recently written a book, Going to School, the book offers the "Ten Hallmarks of Children Who Succeed."

Below are a few of the ideas the two professors suggest to help make your child more successful in school, each aspect involves both parents and children. The children might already possess the quality or might need to learn it, in either case parental support is vital in encouraging the student to succeed. In general, kids who are successful in school possess the following traits, if your child does not currently display these traits, a bit of motivation might help him/her.
  1. Not afraid to ask questions. When a child is stuck, if he or she asks questions to lend some clarity, he or she will more likely pursue a positive direction of learning.
  2. Putting forth effort. Children who are encouraged to make the effort learn that the hard work brings positive results.
  3. Understanding where they are on the learning curve. If a child has an accurate idea of his abilities, he will be more comfortable with the learning process than if he has either been led to believe he is better than the other students or if he has been belittled and deprived of an appreciation for his intelligence.
  4. Good role models in the home. Parents do not need to be geniuses to instill a love of learning in their children, but if parents are willing and eager to learn their children will also have a better chance for appreciating an education.
  5. Understanding boundaries. If a child comes from a home where the rules are well understood, that child will more likely appreciate and follow the rules at school.
