My boys love music. Josh, at 4, fancies himself both a rock star and a master and the soothing lullaby. I found this homemade harmonica project, through our local Science World. The supplies and instructions from their website walk you through this fun project. Little ones might need help tying the elastics and getting the popsicle sticks in position, but they'll enjoy their homemade instrument.
Supplies
2 thin elastic bands
1 thick elastic band
3 popsicle sticks
Making your harmonica
-
Stretch the thick elastic along the edge of one popsicle stick
-
Wet the middle of two popsicle sticks so that they are easily bent into a slight arc
-
Place the elastic wrapped stick in between the other two popsicle sticks with the arcs facing out
-
Tie the ends together with the thin elastics
-
Press your lips along the edge and blow, experimenting with different sounds
This PDF on the Science World website goes on to explain how the sound is created. They also suggest different ways to experiment with the sound, encouraging us to notice why things are happening the way they do.
When your one note wonder is starting to wear on your nerves and you can hear that single note in your sleep, it might be time to try some other DIY instruments for kids. After the break we'll look at a couple more simple music projects for kids.
Maracas are another fun instrument kids can make themselves. Even the little ones can participate in this one, just make sure the filling isn't a choking hazard for them.
Supplies
Two disposable plastic cups
Beans or rice
Duct tape or packing tape
Making your maracas
- Fill one cup 3/4 with rice or beans
- Place the other cup on top rim to rim
- Tape the rims together
- Shake it!
Rice and beans will make very different sounds from each other. If you're feeling really brave let your child dig through the pantry and experiment with different filling and new sounds. They might also like to personalize them using stickers or paint to decorate the cups.
Guitars are another favorite. The DIY guitar, is quick, easy and loads of fun.
Supplies
Elastic bands
Empty shoe box without the lid (preferably child size)
Ruler
Duct tape or packing tape
Making your own guitar
- Stretch the elastics around the shoebox
- Tape the ruler to the back at one end. This is the neck of your guitar
- Strum away!
Kids seem to be the keenest DIY'ers. The kids can form their own little band or you can have a family jam session (you know you want to!). What other instruments have you made? Share your ideas in the comments. I'd love to add some more to our collection.
