The psychology of autumn colors

Now that we are transitioning out of the summer months and into fall it is time to shed the bright colors of summer and slip into the more toned down colors of fall. Whether or not the weather in your area has actually cooled down, the calendar and your local retailers are telling you it truly is autumn. Gone are the bright blues and greens of the summer. Here now are the softer oranges and browns and the muted greens. What does this mean to the average person?

Well, to begin, most of the colors of autumn exude a feeling of warmth and when combined they recall memories of comfort and safety. Retailers use the fall color palette to entice shoppers into buying, but you can also use them at home in projects to evoke feelings; Following are a few insights into the meanings of the autumn colors:

  • Red: Although red can be used as a color for caution, ti is also a color that exudes passion and warmth. Red is usually best when used as an accent color so as not to overwhelm your project.
  • Yellow: This color symbolizes joy and hope. When used during the autumn months it is toned down so as not be too bright or overbearing.
  • Orange: A combination of red and yellow, orange is a fun color that gives joy to any sort of project. Orange stimulates mental activity in the brain and is attractive to younger people.
  • Green: Safety and warmth are two qualities found in the color green. It is also a relaxing color, making it perfect for the autumn months.
  • Brown: Another staple of the fall color palette, brown represents the earth and gives a feeling of comfort.
When the above colors are combined in balance the result is charming and warm, a perfect reflection of the autumn months as we head in to the holidays. Use them wisely for table centerpieces or seasonal displays to lend a feeling of warmth and security in your home.
