The last thing a DIY'er needs is to be held back by a nasty cold. Here we are at the close of summer, heading into a new school year and a new season of colds. Your children will bring them home from school, your partner will carry it home from work, and you'll notice every runny-nose child in a shopping cart, just waiting to pass it your way. Colds seem unavoidable, but they don't have to be.
LifeHacker pointed us to this Prevention article titled Stay Cold-Free This Winter. They list six simple things to can do to avoid catching a cold. I found the most interesting one to be the suggestion that we should carry our own pens. It seems simple, we avoid sharing all sorts of other things in attempts to avoid a cold. Still we often borrow pens from one another, or use common pens for things like signing kids in and out of school or into a doctor's appointment. Take a look through their five other suggestions. They are all simple, easy to do things that will significantly reduce your exposure to cold germs.
Try some of these tips along with washing your hands frequently, and teaching your children to do the same. Good luck dodging the upcoming cold season!

Well, I've developed a phobia toward gems anyway, so I take all the recommended precauthions in the article, except I don't sneeze "into my elbow." What the blazes is that? It's still sneezing on yourself if you do that. The thought is repelling. I either carry tissues or sneeze in a direction where I know it won't touch anyone else NOR myself. As for washing hands, I have always been meticulous about that, since the age of about 3, when my mother taught me it's healthy, and she was a clean freak, herself, anyway. About switching on lights and using my own pen instead of someone else's pen, yeah, I follow those precautions also, whenever possible, or I wash my hands as soon as possible thereafter. That is not to say that I'm afraid to get my hands dirty. No, no! I've made plenty of mud pies, playing as a toddler and dug into hard work in my life. I'm not sure how much keeping clean has kept me healthy, but I've enjoyed shockingly good health compared to others I know, and I really think that being "sanitary" about oneself makes a big difference. That doesn't mean one has to be obsessive-compulsive, but the more things of which I become aware, the more I become like a big soap bubble. Don't worry, I love the smell of soap and I like being a soap bubble.
ReplyThe other thing I make sure I do is to take either wetwipes or travel hand sanitizer with me to the drs. office, and shopping You never know what is on doorknobs or magazines, shopping cart handles. I usually take my own book/magazine.
ReplyI am not a clean freak, and I hardly ever get sick. I can't even remember the last time I was really sick. I am not extremely dirty though. I wash my hands after using the bathroom or touching something like raw meat or eggs. Or other things that make me goobery. See I don't care about touching doorknobs or light switches. And I don't mind sharing food with friends. I think it built up my immune system pretty well :)
ReplyTo prevent colds a bit easier, I have found that they are caused by the consumption of refined sugar which is found in any number of foods these days. It actually destroys the vitamins that help protect the defenses of the body. It also is the prime cause of diabetes 2. I cannot recall the number of times that I have actually prooved this sugar to colds connection to myself. It is also suggested that you eliminate the alternate sugar, corn syrup too. Both of these are in a variety of food products these days. I am also a big supporter of the consumption of oatmeal as a breakfast food and not the fried stuff that many people have had over the past decades. It only takes a few minutes to boil up a pot and the cleanup is practically effortless. This food will help in the area of heart disease. All you need on it is a low fat milk. If you need it sweetened may I suggest some honey for that, but I eat mine plain.
ReplyA glass of orange juice a day will defintely keep the cold bugs away! I used to catch a cold every year right before or after thanksgiving, and it seemed like that first cold made me suseptible to every germ that came my way for the rest of the winter....then two years ago I started drinking a glass of orange juice everyday, and for the last two years I have stayed cold and flu free! Building a strong immune system is the first step to staying healthy....Washing your hands frequently is also a must most especially before touching your eyes or mouth. Cant tell you how many times I have watched women and their children leave public restrooms without washing their hands. I set the example with my girls by heading straight to the sink....and they follow.! They also drink a glass of juice every morning! Signed, healthy in the midwest
ReplyI used to get sick so often that I would miss so many days from work and school that I could not attend for that session. Usually it would occur during a Final tests due to the stress. I decided that I would not get sick that often, anymore.
ReplySo, I set out to wash my hands more often if I touched surfaces that other people touched such as door knobs and handles. I also do not drink or eat from others especially if they are sick.
When you live with others that are spreading germs and are sick too, its difficult to stay well. But, it has made a tremendous difference in the decreased frequency of contacting flu viruses. With the management of stress, washing my hands when I touch dirty surfaces, drinking more orange juice and eating healthier saved me from getting sick like I used to.
The common cold can be a nuissance, but it is not usually deadly. On the other hand, more people die from complications from the flu in the United States each year than from car accidents. Do yourself a favor and get your annual flu shot this year. It will be the best $25 you ever spend; or it will be free if you have Medicare (for those over 65). Get your flu shot this October or November!
ReplyWE GO TO A CHURCH THAT LOVES TO SHAKE HANDS AND HUG.
ReplyMY HUSBAND AND I RUB OUR HANDS GOOD WITH THE ANTIBACTERIAL LIQUID BEFORE WE GET OUT OF THE CAR, AND UPON ENTERING WE MAKE SURE IF WE MUST HUG, WE HOLD A KLEENEX OVER OUR NOSE AND MOUTH AND HOLD THEM AT BAY.
THIS HAS HELP US A LOT WITH COLDS.
BLESSINGS TO ALL
I second the wet wipes...carry in your purse (they come in little packets) and wipe off all shopping cart handles! Not all stores suppply them. Try not to touch your face unless your hands are really clean...eyes, nose and mouth carry viruses like crazy. I retired from teaching and never get colds....built up immunity around the kids all those years! Teachers' perks! LOL Dr. B
ReplyFlu shots only cover certain strains. Your immune system is what controls getting a cold or the flu.
ReplyI used to get 2 colds a year untill i started taking a supplement of 75mg. of zinc everyday...havent had a cold since and thats been 4 years.
I used to get the flu once a year...I started taking garlic capsules everyday (and no I didn't stink) and havent had the flu for 20 years. The active ingredient in a garlic bulb is allicin, and youd have to eat 50 bulbs a day to get the concentrated amount in a capsule. And its inexpensive.
