Remember to re-register for the do not call list

There's little doubt that the federal Do Not Call list is a good thing for most people throughout the United States. All you have to do is sign up with your phone number and a valid e-mail address, and you will be protected from most dinnertime annoyances.

The problem: Some of you may have forgotten that the registration is only good for five years, and if you signed up at the beginning, then the five year mark is heading your way.

What does that mean? Theoretically, it means that if your five-year registration expires, marketers can be sure that your number can legally be called again.

What to do: The Federal Trade Commission, which oversees the list, has a simple fix: re-register. But that means millions of people have to remember to do so. It only takes about one minute to register or even re-register so don't forget. In fact, to be safe, check your registration a little more than a month before it expires. Companies have to verify that phone numbers are not on the list only once a month, so if there is a lapse in registration you could be setting yourself up for receiving calls every night for 31 days.

Never been on the list? You should be!

The only hard part is figuring out how to get your mother to stop calling!

Bette: Thanks for trying to do a good turn for people that can,t find enough to do than condemn you for (1) a joke (2) an error in spelling (3) for trying to be a good guy. Seems they do not have a lot to do!

When the federal no call list went into affect, it hurt the American economy and over 200,000 jobs were lost. It took a bigger tole on the economy then we think. Alot of people were jeoperdized financially and businesses went out.
I wish people would have more love for others. I wish people would understand that not everybody will go to law school or get a PHD,ect, obtaining them a comfortable living. And I wish people weren't so snotty.
Nobody had problems with people calling to sell them stuff 10,20,30,40,even 50 years ago. Most people understood people. Now nobody cares whether or not you make a living. In fact, there are alot of people out there that do not want other people making a living.
There is an inside plot to destroy this country. Our freedoms are being lost. However, I think that God will destroy this country anyway because there are bigger issues more serious then the no call list such as abortion. e have killed over 50 million babies-not fetises.
God will not let it go on forever!

AND....DO YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW HOW TO GET RID OF THEM? All you have to do is get an answering machine !!!!! Then turn your phone off at night if you have a cell phone, which most folks have now anyway. Otherwise the a/m works just fine alone...I still sign up for the no call list too....It will nail a lot of them.

It would surely be nice if we could eliminate the charity and political calls as well. I have my own charities and cannot afford to take on all those people that are allowed to bother us and try to put a guilt trip on us when we say no.
And for all those who bombarded Betty with nasty remarks -- I wish I still had my mother to call. Barb

Hey Tabitha and James, and steph stewart, when I am in my bed with a migraine headache trying to sleep after a Grand Mal seizure I do not need some one invading my personal space and calling my phone to sell me a product I can't afford, have no use for, and will not buy! My answering machine is NOT the answer as the phone still rings and bothers me. My home is my home, NOT a place of business, if I need something from you, I will seek you out, otherwise, stay out of my home!

Your insensitive concluding comment is neither amusing nor even remotely relevant to your otherwise informative article. My mother died this month, Ms. Ryno. Perhaps when yours dies, you'll stop bemoaning her previous calls.

I replied to this previously ... but evidentially I need to write this again.

My intention was not to offend anyone. I am a mother of two. Ironically, not only was I making fun of myself, my own mother and my mother-in-law ... I was also insinuating that there is nothing anyone could possibly do that could make a mother stop calling.

I apologize if I offended you ... it is really a light hearted comment.

    My regards,

    Tanya Ryno
