Ties for Father's Day: A new twist on an old gift

line of several neckties in different patterns

If you are a dad, you are probably cringing at the thought of receiving another tie for Father's Day. If you have a dad, you most likely don't want to get your dad a tie for Father's Day, but it does make a nice gift.

How about a new twist on the traditional tie gift?

If you like to play jokes on your loved ones (and really, who doesn't?), try making and decorating a paper tie. This is an easy, open-ended project you can do with your kids, using only paper and whatever embellishments you would like: paint, makers, sequins, stickers, pom-poms; the sky is the limit.

Dad may be in front of a computer screen an awful lot, so why not send him a virtual tie? You can choose the colors and patterns, write a personalized message and send it off. This makes a fun last-minute gift, too, if you've forgotten Father's Day; it literally takes about one minute to complete.

A creative way to use an old necktie is to repurpose it as a coffee cup sleeve, a project Diane shared with us in a post last month. If you are stealthy enough, snatch one of your Dad's tackiest old ties for this project.

Speaking of tacky tie-snatching, that tie will make a perfect wall hanging with your child's picture on it, and Kaboose has the directions to create this gift you can make with your kids.

Aside from the few craft supplies you'll need for any of the projects, the only other prerequisite is a sense of humor, and that goes for the creators as well as the recipients. If you are laughing as you make the project and Dad laughs when he opens it, then you have done your job as a dutiful child.
