This week, the last standing typewriter factory in the world closed up shop. But you can still keep the spirit alive with these craft ideas.

I'll admit, it was a blow to hear that that no new typewriters will be produced -- after all, they have a special nostalgic place in my heart next to Polaroid film. But it's not fair to get too hung up over the news: If nothing else, it's highly hypocritical, considering I'm typing this on a computer.

But while you can't expect companies to continue to produce typewriters when the sales have plummeted, you can count on the crafters on Etsy to produce beautiful tributes to the typewriter. As we take a moment of silence, check out the work of these brilliant DIYers.

Will it catch on?
If you're going it anyways, shouldn't you get the cash? Photo: Getty

Ever find yourself unclogging your drain or repairing a chipped tile and grumbling "I should really be paid for this"?

England's National Housing Federation feels your pain. The BBC reports that housing associations and councils spend about $1,633 on repairs per property, per year. So doesn't it make sense to put the money in the hands of the renters, rather than the contractors?

No, that doesn't mean renters will be in charge of everything that goes wrong -- just the little things. Landlords will still be responsible for uneven floorboards, where-did-those-come-from ceiling leaks and complicated plumbing issues.

And for the truly anti-DIY crowd, fear not: Tenants are allowed to use the cash for hiring help on their own...or perhaps buying dinner for a particularly handy friend. And while some skeptics might argue that simply paying tenants to take on a landlord's duties makes things more difficult for the renter, consider this: With the easier stuff pushed off their plates, wouldn't landlords be better equipped to handle major repairs? After all, if my landlord didn't have to deal with every one of my 29 building-mates calling to get a fix for their chipped sink, maybe he'd have time to tackle that weird water sound happening in all of our bathrooms. Or get the washing machine to stop eating my quarters.

And he's not the only person to benefit -- if I knew I could get paid for painting over the spackle he placed after a minor leak, I'd get around to it much sooner. Housing Minister Grant Shapps says it best: "When residents take pride in their homes it saves their landlords cash, so I think it's right that tenants should benefit too."

What do you think: Would you welcome cash-for-DIYing? Or do you want all home repair issues off your to-do list?

Most people know Anthony Mackie from his roles in The Adjustment Bureau or The Hurt Locker and Brooklynites are now getting to know him as the man behind new Bed-Stuy bar NoBar. But this isn't just any celebrity-turned-nightlife-impresario. Not only will you find Anthony behind the bar most nights, you'll find that he built the bar. And the bar back. And oh yes, the floors. And did we mention this man is not afraid to snake a toilet? Read on to see how he stayed on budget thanks to eBay, why (he says) women aren't impressed with his handy skills and his feelings on mass-market furniture in our exclusive Q&A.

ShelterPop: Let's start from the beginning. How did you get started in carpentry?
Anthony Mackie: My dad was a carpenter and a roofer, and every summer he would make his sons work with him -- I did it for three years. I have a lots of carpenters and contractors in my family so that's how I got the bug. There's just something remarkable about taking a piece of wood and making it into something. It's gratifying, really fulfilling. Anybody can buy a $2,500 designer table but not everybody can make one. When I was in college I couldn't really afford furniture so my internship boss -- the head of the foremen at Julliard -- let me use all his saws and tools so I could make my own furniture.

Do you still have any of it?
You know what, I don't. This is not a testament to my work but it all fell apart. But that was a long time ago. It did last more than ten years.

Fair enough. Now, at NoBar, you've built everything but the chairs. Can you elaborate?
I built the bar, the bar back, the footrest, all of the tables and I made some of the frames for the artwork. I also re-framed the entire place and taped and floated all the sheetrock. In a few places, the wood on the floor was kind of destroyed, so I got 1x4's and tongue-and-grooved them.

I'm sorry, you what?
I made the flooring. It's amazing, you can save a fortune by doing it this way. Everywhere I was looking, they wanted $475/square foot for the wood flooring I wanted. And when you're working on a 900-1,000 square-foot place, it can add up. So I went on eBay and found these irregular wood logs and I bought huge lot of wood, all different sizes, but the same length. I got a router table and created nice, small tongue and grooves on them.

I love that you got your flooring on eBay.
Also, I didn't want traditional banquettes -- they take up too much space -- so I went on Craigslist and found this guy who was selling these church pews for 70 bucks. All you had to do was pick them up.

So you picked them up. Did he recognize you?
No, it was pretty funny. I put on my sunglasses and my hat on low. He was like "Eh, give me my $70." I got out of there as fast as possible.

Take a look at those floors! Photo: Jennifer Cooper

It all sounds like so much fun. What kind of challenges came up?
I had an original location set, so I built all this stuff for a different space. But my relationship with my business partner went sour fast so when we found the new place I had to recut and refit the bar and tables.

That sounds awful.
Yeah, and the plumbing here in New York is just a disaster. I've done projects in a bunch of different places but the plumbing here is absolutely amazing. I was elbow deep in the toilet last night. It rains and everything gets backed up. I have a 100-feet snake so I snaked all the way out to the street.

Why were you doing this? Where's your staff?
My dad was very successful because he worked harder than everyone that worked for him. If all the people who work here as employees see me, the movie actor, working hard, they have nothing to complain about. Besides, I consider myself to be a man's man. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty just because I'm in a movie now and then.

I like your attitude. Any other mishaps?
Oh yeah. Right before we were about to open the first time -- liquor license was here, the health department came, we were all set to open the doors -- we turned on the ceiling fans and the entire ceiling drops. All the center braces rip out of the roof. It bowed down like a foot and half. So we went and made a T out of a 4x4 and a 2x6, put a jack under it and jacked up the whole ceiling. Put holes in the sheetrock and rebraced it. The day the guy did it originally I wasn't here and he did it completely wrong. It set us back a week and a half.

But now that you did it, it's all safe, right?
I was literally monkey bar swinging from beam to beam to make sure they wouldn't fall again. This is going nowhere.

Be honest. Do you ever use the fact that you built this all by hand as a pick-up line?
Not at all. One thing I've realized is that women of this generation are impossible to impress. I tell them I built everything, they're like "who cares". I haven't found my impressive pickup line yet. But I'm going to just throw some stuff out while bartending.

Anthony at the bar. Photo: Jennifer Cooper

How much time are you planning to spend there?
As much time as I can. I'm not working on any movies until September so I'm here, tending bar and cleaning toilets.

You're such a Renaissance man. Do you do any other DIY projects? Maybe some crafting?
When I redid my house in New Orleans, I tried to make curtains. Or as they call them, drapes. It didn't work out. They're really expensive. For 14-foot ceilings, you're paying $500-600. So I went and got material and tried to make some drapes. I borrowed a friend's sewing machine because it looked so easy. But the material gathered and ripped, I burned the machine.

Ha! Ok, so fine. When you finally find the right pick-up line, you'll have to find a woman who can sew, to complement your skills.
Exactly. I love the building part. The sewing? Not really for me.

Do you judge people with mass market furnishings?
Not at all. Though I did just get rid of my last piece of IKEA furniture. The last little table. I found this wood in upstate New York and made a nice A-frame picnic table to replace it. Building it, that was my therapy.

Anthony with famous friends Samuel L. Jackson and Sam Rockwell. Photo: Jennifer Cooper

You've said if acting doesn't work out you'll have a future in construction. Any similarities between the two fields?
It's funny, I always wanted to do a carpentry TV show but every time I've pitched it, it's been shot down. The interesting thing about acting is that you're always developing and creating something. Just like construction. And when people see you do good work, they refer you to the next person. If you do shoddy work in construction -- or are an a**hole on a movie set -- your career is cut short.

Thanks, Anthony!

Lucky for Anthony, it seems like he's got both areas down pat. And luckily for fans of his movies -- and his bar -- he's doing a stellar job doing both at the same time. As for that carpentry TV show ... hey HGTV, are you reading this? Get this man a show. We promise we'll watch.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Paint Chips Turned Wall Art

Filed under: Crafts, Crafts & Celebrations
Decided on a color and left with a pile of those tiny paint chips? Next time your family catches you shimmying around the house, singing into an air microphone while dusting shelves, consider yourself lucky: At least the whole internet isn't watching you and cracking up. (But that doesn't mean we shouldn't watch and crack up at these).
Every family has their preferred way to display beautiful heirloom photos. But even the most arresting vintage images can be easily overlooked when displayed in the obvious choice for black & white snapshots: A simple black frame with white matting. Elegant, yes. But a little too predictable.

So why not give it a thoroughly modern spin by pairing the photo with not one but two bright, bold prints? And is there a more perfect holiday to celebrate vintage snaps of the ones we love than Mother's Day?

Photo Editor Jolie Novak had this amazing photo of her mom, Leslie, pregnant with her and kindly volunteered it for our project. Want to recreate it at home with a shot of your own mom? Read on...

My ideal self does a lot of things well. I speak different languages fluently, I never drip paint on the floor while doing simple touch-ups and I arrange flowers effortlessly and beautifully while wearing a lovely apron and telling some charming joke.

Want flower arrangements like these? All photos: Amy Preiser

And now, thanks to floral subscription company H.Bloom, I'm one step closer to my ideal self. As a preview of the new flower arranging classes they're offering in their New York and Washington DC locations, they invited me and a friend to a tutorial with their experts -- and wine and cheese. I can't share the snacks (sorry!) but I can take you through the step-by-step guide.

Flower Arranging Step #1: Pick your flowers. Pick your color palate. Choose flowers in groups of threes.
We chose ours from a mix of big blooms like Yellow Spider Mums (yellow flowers with lots of skinny petals), Coffee Break Roses (dark roses), Free Spirit Roses (bright orange roses) and Esperance Roses pink-and-white roses) and then moved onto accents like Happy Romance Hypericum (red berries), Erica Pink Bliss Heather (fluffy pink/purple stems), White Hybrid Waxflower (small white flowers on branches) and Yellow Solidago (fluffy yellow stems).

But when it comes to your bouquet, remember this: Just pick what you like, and what you feel goes together best.

Flower Arranging Step #2: Clear everything off of the stem, except the good stuff on top.
That includes the leaves. Toss all the extra aside and only focus on the long stems with beautiful leaves and flowers up top. Not only will this give you a healthier arrangement but it will look better and be easier to manage.

Flower Arranging Step #3: Start with one flower in your hand and place the second flower's stem diagonally across it. Slightly turn your hand, then add the next flower.
This is really the key for arranging a hand-tied bouquet. You're always turning your hand and "crossing" a new flower into the mix. This is the creative part -- use your eye to continuously try to fill out the bouquet to make it look round and full, while keeping the flowers at similar heights. Make sure to alternate between the flowers to keep the mix interesting. And when it looks just right, use the leaves to surround your bouquet.

Flower Arranging Step #4: Tie things off and cut the stems
It's easiest if you have a friend to help you. At H.Bloom we used Oasis wire, but if you're doing this at home, try stealing a twist tie from a bag of bread. It has a similar consistency and gets the job done. Once your bouquet is secure, snip off enough of the stems so it will fit in your vase.

Flower Arranging Step #5: Line the vase with broad leaves.
We used Aspidistra leaves. See how only two leaves lined in there cover the glass so that you don't see the tied-off, naked stems? It's a tiny touch that makes things look super professional.

I'm grinning here because I'm so proud of my first flower arrangement. Not bad, right? And check out the pro-level arrangement made by my friend Nicole!

And now -- more exciting news: For those of you who still prefer a florist's perfect touch, H.Bloom has generously extended a special offer for DIY Life and ShelterPop readers: If you're in New York or Washington DC, head over to H.Bloom and use the coupon code ShelterPop25 for 25% off any floral subscription's first delivery!

KBIS, for the uninitiated, is like Fashion Week for kitchens and bathrooms. Companies are presenting their new and best wares, looking to impress and inspire designers and design fiends alike. But while Fashion Week is all form, KBIS is heavy on the function. Every year, the companies introduce products that aim to make your life easier through Jetsons-style technology. Here's what's happening so far:

 The Builder Buzz

At KBIS 2011... The winners are announced! The winners of the "Best-Of" awards, that is. 500 entries came in across 19 categories, ranging from the simple "Best Kitchen" to more specific ones like "Small Bathroom." That's one of the winners in the above photo -- Best Bathroom by Holly Rickert of Ulrich, Inc. in Ridgewood, NJ.

At KBIS 2011... The stars are out: Great kitchens deserve great chefs, right? The Food Network's "Cooking for Real" host Sunny Anderson and "Top Chef Masters" winner Rick Bayless are at the show, along with celebrity chef Curtis Stone. Yum! Also attending: Designer Jeff Lewis of "Interior Therapy With Jeff Lewis", "celebrity carpenter" (who knew that was a title?) Ed Sanders of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and the always charming Eric Stromer. Lastly (and perhaps, most surprisingly): Mariel Hemingway, who will present on keeping families healthy through the best local food and products.

At KBIS 2011... New product introductions, galore. There's the NanaWall Kitchen Transition, a custom window-door combo that has the ability to turn your kitchen into an indoor-outdoor paradise.

Few people love Peeps so much that they want to devour them fresh, stale and in enormous quantities. Yes, I'm one of those people. But for the rest of you, I rounded up these tasty crafts that make even better use of the sugar-y marshmallow treats. Whether you want to spend your Easter crafting with your family or the days after doing something creative with those leftover Peeps, these projects should keep you busy -- and your home downright festive.

Easter Craft #1: A Sugar-Sweet Wreath
First off -- a wreath that's bright, cherry and basically guaranteed to make guests smile. Gerbera Designs has the step-by-step for this simple project that makes excellent use of toothpicks and a straw wreath.

Easter Craft #2: Tasty Placecards
Still have leftover toothpicks? Use them as an excuse to get Peeps on the table...pre-dessert. These beauties elevate a normal placecard from a simple tabletop accent to the main event. Head to Store and Style for full tutorial.

Easter Craft #3: A Cheeky Vase
You can't beat fresh flowers...except for when you complement them with some cute bunny faces. Between the electric-colored dye and copious amount of sugar, Peeps are basically the opposite of organic so they definitely add a shocking element to an otherwise serene arrangement. Mommy Savers has the full instructions so you can bring this look home.

Easter Craft #4: "Floral" Centerpiece
No time to pick up flowers before guests arrive? Build one. And give it a nutritious place to grow. Like, uh, jelly beans. If you're going to put this in the center of your Easter table, be prepared for little hands to grab a taste. Hey, no sense in everything being too perfect, right? Get the step-by-step at The Hungry Mouse.
Easter Craft #5: Peep Pops
We left in one edible craft -- though you might think these are too cute to scarf down. We love that the vanilla cover makes these Peeps look totally demure. Who knew they could look so chic when covered up? Get the full scoop at Sugar Swings and then make your own versions in every color combo imaginable.

Easter Craft #5: Hilarious Artwork
Why shouldn't your day-old candy qualify as art? This project cracks me up...and is hugely intriguing. What happened to the lone, bitten Peep? And why are the other Peeps standing there so innocently? Choose to Thrive tells you how it's done.
Be Careful!

Easter weekend is peak time for getting started on spring maintenance. And according to a new study, getting hurt in the process. Here's how to stay safe this holiday.

 Careful, guys! Photos: Getty

Who knew that Easter could be scarier than Halloween? A new study from Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals shows that there have been 16% more patients admitted during the holiday weekend than any other day.

Why? Well, it's easy to see. People are home with their families, the weather's improving -- isn't it the perfect time to stretch your legs and say "Why yes I will go on the roof and try and patch up that mysterious leak!"

If you're one of the many that will be taking the plunge this weekend, listen up: Aside from all the other reasons to stay safe, you'll really want to pay extra attention. Who wants to end up in a crowded emergency room? Instead...

Practice DIY safety by: Always double-checking that appliances are OFF when you plug them in.
Otherwise, your machine -- like one writer's drum sander -- might take off across the room (and maybe head after you, if you're especially unlucky!)

Practice DIY safety by: Keeping the right gear on hand.
Safety glasses? Check. Work gloves? Check. Dust mask, face shield, helmet, sound muffs? If you don't have them, get them! If you need to stock up, get the full equipment 101 first.

Practice DIY safety by: Never disable safety devices.
Yes, we can hear you. "I don't need the blade guard, I've done this a million times!" Don't. Just don't. When operating a table saw or any other extremely sharp tools, please take the extra few seconds to work within the safety constraints.

Practice DIY safety by: Having a plan.
Not just "Run!!". Only two-thirds of American households have a fire escape plan and while we're not implying that you're going to set your house on fire this weekend, it wouldn't hurt to be prepared just in case...someone else sets your house on fire.

Practice DIY safety by: Brushing up on ladder safety.
Don't just hop on -- remember to place it carefully so that if you do fall, it won't be backyards onto a staircase. And for goodness sakes, wear the right shoes and check the locks.

Whether you're trying to plan a super original first date or just hoping to remind your partner of how creative you are, a craft-oriented date is the perfect solution. Not only is it budget-friendly, but it will get you both out of your comfort zone (and the monotony of coffees/drinks/desserts) and bring you closer.

We found the best crafty dates on HowAboutWe, a dating site that lets users fill in the dots of "How About We..." to take you offline ASAP. And according to the site's co-founder Brian Schechter, the benefits of DIY dates go beyond a fun night. "If you're go on a crafty date, you know the guy (or girl) you're going out with is also into the same things you are, so there's a good chance you'll have fun together and want to go out again," Schechter tells us. "And even if they're not the person you're looking for, you at least made something cool together, so you come out on top anyway." One more perk? "Besides, crafty, work-with-your-hands people are way cool. And super clever. They're fun to go on dates with."

That's all we need to hear. Check out some of the best ideas we found from HowAboutWe's users.

Outdoor Cheap Date Ideas

Forget bringing flowers to a date -- these activities take are way more hands on. From "guerilla gardening" in the park to building a home for the less fortunate, we're all about these get-outside-NOW dates.

Artsy Cheap Date Ideas

Some of these require skill (public sketching), some require courage (trying to sell your just-made artwork to strangers). But all are worth it for the story.

Silly Cheap Date Ideas

In addition to being creative and crafty, these ideas are among the most hilarious -- and yes, the ones we'd most want to recreate. Question is, what to do first: Bedazzle thrift shop clothes or make origami cranes?

Goodbye old tools, hello flowers. Photos: DiggersList; Getty

Need that extra push to get rid of those old kitchen cabinets, windows or a loveseat? Here's the perfect incentive: If you're one of the first 1,000 people to post an item for sale on DiggersList before the end of the month, the site will thank you with a package of seeds sent right to your door.

We love everything about this plan because the good stuff just keeps coming: Once you post the items, people can sign up to buy them and place them in good homes -- places that will actually use that bamboo flooring instead of letting it sit in the garage. That leaves you with money in your pocket (or, you know, online bank account) and those seeds for you plant anywhere in your house or garden.

Feeling extra eco-ambitious? We dare you to invest the money you make from the sale to buy earth-friendly products like green outdoor furniture, lighting and paint.

Don't think you have anything to list? Look again: In the back of the garage, under the bed, in that out-of-sight-out-of-mind spot in the backyard. Worried that all that stuff isn't in good enough shape to sell? Check out our favorite feature on the site: Donating to a local non-profit. And yes, you even qualify for seeds if you post a "Wanted" ad... so if you've been craving a new drill/dishwasher/drywall, now's the time to speak up.

And of course, it wouldn't be fair if we didn't also point you towards some of our favorite listings: A gallon of Benjamin Moore Newburg Green, a lovely claw foot bathtub and bright red lockers that would give serious life to a boring laundry room.

Tell us, what have you found on DiggersList? And will you be taking advantage of their free seeds deal?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

After a Breakup, Cleaning Can Heal

Filed under: Storage & Organization, Essential Skills, Know-How
Post-break up or divorce, household chores might be the last thing on your to-do list.

When a relationship ends, it's easy to self-medicate on the sofa with ice cream and self-pity. But as psychotherapist Mary Darling Montero points out in HuffPost Divorce, the healthiest thing for your heart just might be spring cleaning.

Montero explains: "If you're dealing with a fresh heartbreak, it can be tempting to leave traces of your ex around. For one thing, it sustains us in a state of denial, and denial feels safer than reality. The day we take her clothes out of the closet, we're admitting that it's over; it's a gesture heavy with the symbolism of an ending that we believe we cannot bear."

And sure enough, there are even more benefits to washing that ex right out of your house.

After a breakup... Cleaning can help you slim down
Not only will vacuuming burn about 75 calories but it will tone your shoulders and biceps. Feeling energized? Try cleaning the gutters and burn upto 350 calories.

After a breakup... Living in a mess can bring down your mood
In the Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin zeros in on the guilty "pleasure" of leaving the house messy. In truth, keeping things tidy when you're feeling down can actually boost your mood. Pick up those wrappers!

After a breakup... Cleaning can make you more social
This is a no-brainer: When are you more likely to invite friends over, when your living room is a disaster zone or when it smells spring-fresh and all the surfaces are sparkling?

After a breakup... Cleaning can bring clarity
Whole Living quotes Rabbi Sherre Hirsch and makes us think twice about complaining about clearing the kitchen counters: "When your physical surroundings are cluttered, your emotional and spiritual self is cluttered. If your space is clean, then your mind is open and you can let God in."
Either way, these projects are quick, easy and sure to make you feel like an eco-superstar.

There are plenty of reasons to go solar, but there are two that get most of the glory: Cutting down your energy bills and making a step in the right, eco-conscious direction.

True, these projects aren't as big as this one but that doesn't mean they won't make an impact. Photo: Getty

Like anything there are plenty of ways to start, both big and small. You want options? You got them:

DIY Solar Idea #1: Build your own solar battery charger kit. For $60, you can get a kit to make your own solar charger that can charge not only batteries but cell phones, iPods and other small electronic devices. Feeling more ambitious? Build one from scratch.

DIY Solar Idea #2: Convert your clock to solar power. You'll need to measure your clock's power requirements, secure a solar cell and use some hot glue to connect it to the wires and click -- get the full instructions to get started!

DIY Solar Idea #3: A more low-tech option: Make a solar oven. Not only does it give you the chance to move summertime cooking outside (sans BBQ) but it's a great way to show off your eco-endeavors for neighbors. You'll need a pot, a plastic bag, one of those sun reflectors from your car and the directions on building an official solar cooker. Think it looks too wacky to display in the front yard? Bring it out back!
You probably haven't played a good one, then. We've rounded up our favorite DIY pranks from around the web to help change that.

There's a lot of attention paid to office pranks: Cubicles filled with balloons, switched office chairs and staplers suspended in Jello (thank you, The Office!). But we suggest that you take your April Fool's Day antics straight home. Yes, to your family. Because they have to love you no matter what. Your boss? Not so much.

April Fool's Day in...Your Front Yard
Get a "For Sale" yard sign from a hardware store and stick it in front of your home before your kids and spouse get back. Try to position yourself at the window to see their confused faces.

April Fool's Day in...The Bathroom
Before everybody goes to bed, sprinkle salt on all the toothbrushes but your own. The salt won't actually hurt anyone but it'll make for some funny faces once they start brushing.

April Fool's Day in...The Bedroom
First step: Wait until your family members are asleep. Then sneak into the room in the middle of the night and swap their drawers. When they groggily reach for a shirt in the morning of April 2nd and find only pants, delight in reminding them there's no harm in an April Fool's day prank that lasts until the next morning.

April Fool's Day in...The Kitchen
Fill a cereal bowl halfway with water and freeze it overnight. In the morning, pour your spouse/kids/roommate a bowl of cereal on top of the ice block. Once they dig in and their spoon hit the hard ice, that's your cue to start cracking up.

April Fool's Day in...The Living Room
Tape down the phone button on your family's landline so that whoever picks it up will think it's dead (and shout "hello?!" at least three times).
When our friends at Curbed and Design Milk both posted this amazing video of a retractable kitchen island we watched it twice: Once to bask in the coolness of the project and then again to try and figure out how the brilliant Tim Thaler made it happen. Behold: The centerpiece of the kitchen of the future.

We took to Thaler's YouTube page where he's been dutifully posting answers to the many questions coming in. Here's a peek at the discussion:

Q: Show us the inner workings! What was the pricing and installation like? How long did it take?
A: I'll post a video of the inner workings next week! Sadly, I spend endless nights planning the logistics of it and how to do it. When I started all I knew was I wanted an island to come out of my floor, and retract back without anyone knowing it's really there... I had to figure out everything myself, as there really isn't any "how to" documents for something like this. I did the entire installation myself, bought used parts, and managed to make it for under $1000.00.

Q: Why was it so quiet going down but noisy coming up?
A: it's hydraulics. A motor runs to pump oil in when going up, when going down, it's just releasing the oil that is built up.

Q: How to you maintain the hydraulics and clean the pit of inevitable grit, grime, and dropped food scraps?
A: The hydraulics just take regular Mobil 1 5W-30 motor oil... And I clean the same way anyone would, a sweep and a dustpan. Plus, I rarely prepare food on the island, that's what the countertops are for with an undermount sink and garbage disposal...

These flowers get a whimsical touch with a butterfly middle and lily pad backdrop. To make them at home, start with a large piece of green construction paper. Cut it into a circle and then snip out a triangle to create the pad. Then, cut three pieces of white paper into circles -- each one slightly smaller than the last. Cut scalloped edges on all the circles, cutting about 1/4 into the center. When ready, layer the three circles on top of the "lily pad" and glue them together in the center. After curling the "petals" with your fingers, place a butterfly sticker in the center.

As this natural energy alternative becomes increasingly accessible, more and more homeowners are beginning to realize how much they can really save by taking advantage of the sun's powerful rays. Read on to find out how you can save too.

Peter Anderson, Getty Images

Tip #1: See if your old solar panels can be reused.
If you have old solar panels laying around (or maybe a neighbor has upgraded and donated their old ones) you might just be able to use them again. If they're solar thermals, you're in luck: the only damage done is that the dark surface has probably fallen off and you'll need to paint the panels with flat black paint to absorb the sun's rays. Leave it out in the sun and see if it gets hot to make sure the paint works. Otherwise you may need to replace the insulation. If you have solar photovoltaic (PV) systems though, you'll need to seek out a professional from a PV company to see if they're still in good shape.

Dreamlight,Getty Images

Tip #2: Consider the importance of professional installation.
You may be reading this site because you to love to DIY -- and you might try to save some cash by installing a PV solar system yourself -- but you really can't skimp on a task that requires proper training. Not only do the actual panels need to be installed on the roof, but a registered electrician is needed for the electrical connections. A pro -- namely, one with with NABCEP certification -- will make sure the panels are installed at the right angle, that they're secure and that the shutoff system is in place.

Alamy

Tip #3: Not ready to get rid of your on-demand water heater? Consider a combo.
There are many ways you can use solar hot-water panels with a tankless on-demand water heater. But note: You'll need an on-demand water heater with thermostatic controls to regulate the heat output. These controls make sure you're using as little energy as possible to get the solar-preheated water hot enough for your daily in-home water use. As always, it's wise to check in with a licensed solar installer if you're considering making this change. You'll want to make sure you have the right venting setup; double-wall stainless flues might be necessary.

Alamy

Tip #4: Know your lingo
Even though they sound similar, "Passive House" designs and passive solar house design are two different concepts. Passive House is dependent on a super-efficient envelope which holds onto the heat that's otherwise easily lost -- body heat, cooking, clothes drying, and so on. Meanwhile, a passive solar house requires optimal orientation, which means large thermal masses that collect solar energy. It also requires a certain type of climate, which is difficult to nail down. The Passive House is the winner here -- a structure that's 75% to 90% more efficient than usual.
One week into summer -- are you feeling it yet? Last week we kicked off our Energy Savings series by showing you how to conserve power while using kitchen appliances. Now we're tackling the potential energy-zappers in every room in the house: windows.

As much as 20 percent of summer heat enters your home as sunlight through windows. Check out these clever tips on how to save a bundle and keep your home more energy-friendly.

Getty Images

Tip #1: Upgrade the Sealing Around Your Windows
With new windows, there's often a gap between the jamb and framing where air sneaks in. A blower door (a powerful type of fan) and infared camera can help identify exactly where the leak is and you can then caulk the area near the casing, stool and apron. No luck with that? Remove the casing and use spray foam around the window jamb.

Tip #2: Check That Your Windows Are Low-E
Thinking about window film as a way to buff up your windows' efficiency? If your windows are already Low emissivity (low-e), then don't waste your time, window film won't make much of a difference. Not sure if you've got low-e windows in the first place? Place a white sheet of paper outside and look at its reflection in the window. Seeing a white reflection? Not low-e. But if it's showing up yellow or pink than it's probably low-e. And remember this: films are hard to remove, and because they can heat up the glass they may damage your dual-pane windows.

Tip #3: Install Energy-Efficient Replacement Windows
In the market for new windows? Your best bet are Energy Star-rated windows. Make sure they're properly installed (shoddy work can be a major source of energy loss) and double-glazed. Yes, they're affordable, and they'll end up saving you money on cooling and heating by helping to keeping your home at a comfortable temperature.

Twilight Field Journal

Tip #4: Invest in a Black-Out Shade
While window films can fall short, the best external energy saver for your windows is a simple blackout roller shade. Make sure it's PVC-free fabric, so it's safe for kids' rooms. Other options to try: Solar screens, roman shades or solar blinds (though it's tricky to find these without PVC).

Corbis

In a perfect world, everything would be as easy to recycle as plastic bottles and cardboard boxes. But just because some items are harder to set free than others, it doesn't mean you should just toss them in the trash.

Keep in mind, the key word here is hard...NOT impossible. Following are some of the most common recycling conundrums. "What do I do with these candy wrappers, packing peanuts, etc.?" Well, read on...

1. Candy wrappers and product packaging are probably loading up your trash can, right? They don't have to. You can make your own DIY reuse products -- Starburst bracelets, anyone? Or just give the materials to TerraCycle where they'll donate money to a cause of your choice for each piece: get three pennies for your charity for every Stonyfield yogurt container, or two cents for candy wrappers. Once they get your shipments of trash, they turn them into products like tote bags or corkboards that people can then buy on the site.

Getty Images

2. Fluorescent light bulbs contain small amounts of mercury that seep into the solid waste stream when discarded like regular trash. The solution? Check out Lamp Recycle, where you'll find your closest light bulb drop-off location (it might even be as convenient as The Home Depot ). The mercury in will be captured and reused for new bulbs.

Getty Images

3. Carpets and rugs made of natural fibers can be composted -- or if you're more squeamish, find your nearest compost center on Earth 911. Synthetic carpets can be recycled, but you may have a hard time doing it yourself because of the rug's size. The Carpet America Recovery Effort will direct you to a local business that has the capacity to recycle large rugs. Otherwise you can contact a local installer or contractor on your own to see if they'll do it for you.

Corbis

4. Books should be donated to friends, public libraries or thrift shops. Or take advantage of Book Mooch, where giving away your well-loved books builds points that earn you a new read. Books in unreadable condition? Many college bookstores have a recycling box from Green Earth Book Recyclers, or you can send them directly to Book Destruction, where you'll get a notarized certificate guaranteeing that your books were processed and repulped.

Getty Images

5. Towels and fabric can be composted, so long as they're made of cotton, wool, linen and silk (see #6 for more.) Depending on the size and conditions of the pieces, you can also donate them to child care centers where they'll get new lives as craft supplies, or to animal care centers where they'll be reused as rags.

Getty Images

6. Packing peanuts come in two materials: plastic and vegetables derivative. Put one of yours under water to find out what you have -- the vegetable derivitive ones will dissenigrate, so you can simply soak a batch at a time and let them go down the drain once they're fully dissolved. If they're plastic, try dropping them off at a chain packing store, like Mail Boxes Etc. Or check The Plastic Loose Fill Council for more nearby drop off locations.
7. Batteries can be dropped off at your local electronics store. Most shops have a bin for these and for good reason: by recycling and not trashing dead batteries, you keep hazardous heavy metals from getting into landfills and, eventually, the air. Plus, the recovered plastic and metals can help make new batteries.
