Fair Isle coast - Scotland
Fair Isle is one of the Shetland Islands, a group of islands that currently belong to Scotland. Geographically, they are near the Arctic Circle and somewhat between Scotland and Norway, so historically, there is also some Norwegian influence on the area. The isolated islands have a cold Northern European climate and a history of sheep husbandry. Stranded knitting throughout a garment creates a double layer of yarn, so it's not surprising that it's been a popular way to make sweaters in both the Shetland Islands and Norway for many years.http://www.flickr.com/photos/lhoon/161160670/
