Disneyland has always been terminally low on space, so while the facade of the ride is in New Orleans Square, the majority of it is in a building located just outside the park's perimeter. Guests have to be moved underground to get to the second building, so this octagonal elevator was created. The portraits are not what they initially seem to be. Although it's not necessary to move guests down a level in any of the other parks, the effect is used in all the versions of the Mansion. Instead of an elevator, guests are in a room with a ceiling that slowly rises. It really feels like you're traveling downwards! http://www.flickr.com/photos/brianrechenmacher/459017284/
