Korean War Veteran John Ramsey of Clover, S.C., Faces Jail Time for Junk in His Yard

Sep 26th 2012 6:03PM @Dennis the Menance: 'Menance'? Typical younger smart-mouth who thinks that simply by virtue of growing older, others then have the RIGHT to force a human being out of their hard-earned home? Are you serious? Or seriously for real? HE more than earned the right to stay in his own home! Who do YOU think you are imagining that seniors somehow MUST downsize? Why? To make room for lazy schlubs such as you who expect life handed to them on a plate? You can take THAT idea and put it where the sun doesn't shine. My husband and I (he's recently retired) are UPsizing not the reverse, simply because we choose to. The TOWN is the one who passed the recent law in this man's community declaring it a problem didn't they, as Towns so often do? There's something called 'grandfathering' which usually allows existing properties exemptions from 'new rules'. AND if they think it's so terrible, do what so many here have suggested: get in there, enlist his neighbours' help, and do what's necessary to help him out. He's more than earned it by his military service. For ANY town to threaten huge fines which he can't possibly pay and JAIL time over property issues is inconceivable and pure insanity --power and control run amok.

DIY Warrior: Installing a Light Fixture

Oct 3rd 2010 8:05PM For years I've been quite willing to do many projects in my own home: tiling floors, tiling backsplashes, refinishing furniture, even getting the schematics and helping replacing non-working parts for washers and dryers. There is ONE thing I'd never touch ...and you couldn't pay me enough to do - and that is in wall or ceiling electrical work. It's so inherently dangerous if one has no real clue about the wiring (I've even had some not-so-great electricians do work on my home over the years)....but the codes change and if an electrician isn't up to code or licensed, he isn't getting past my front door. EVEN if the repair or the work costs a little more? Our lives and that of our pets is worth the extra cost.

My father-in-law could do anything ....fix anything: he called many of the home-made 'fixes' he saw in older homes 'shoemaker jobs'. :) Insisted when we bought the house in the mid 1970's that we pay extra to have all copper wiring throughout...more important than having new furniture...even though 'code' at the time allowed for less. I'll always be grateful for his foresight.

@jms2161...funny, I don't have to waste a single dollar betting that you're a complete jerk. You've already proven it.

Spinach and Swiss Cheese Strata

May 14th 2010 3:23AM @Maria...actually, she never said they were 'shacking up'. Merely described him as her boyfriend and that he cooks and yes, clearly implied that they live in the same abode. 'Shacking up' though, since she gave no such inference, is clearly within your mind and doesn't belong here where recipes are being discussed. So kindly MYOB, and stick to the topic.

Rough Return to Live Stage for Whitney Houston

Apr 18th 2010 11:44PM Barbra isn't 70 either! What's this obsession with adding years onto a female singer's life? Barbra Streisand is going to be 68 next week and Dolly Parton turned 64 in January, and both are fabulous looking youthful women who still have their voices.

Mortgage rates expected to rise as government support phases out

Feb 2nd 2010 3:01PM Not for anything, Red White & Hue - but anyone who actually DID live in a super high-priced apartment on the Upper East Side would probably know how to spell Apartment - and also know that 'mileage' and 'themselves' were both spelled thusly (given that the people in those high-priced, high-class apartments are for the most part educated and wealthy people with actual jobs with incomes). Just saying. Further, most gentlemen would find it highly undignified to misogynistically insult a woman because of her name...

What she was implying - attempting to get you to understand on this blog about MORTGAGES, was that people who own homes have something of value, unlike those who live in apartments. Apartment dwellers pay rent which is gone forever into someone else's pocket - while a mortgage payment is, in effect, paying yourself AS 'landlord'..because it's one's own home - where one can have the freedom to decorate, paint, choose which shrubs, trees and flowers to plant...unlike those who actually own Condominiums, or Co-ops who are bound by Board rules. Of course if you actually lived in one of those you would have said so.

Blake Says He and Amy Winehouse Are 'Engaged' and 'Want Kids'

Dec 20th 2009 10:22PM sieben13..anyone who would refer to a child as a 'bastard'..is a piece of manure. NO child deserves to be labeled such ..by you or anyone else. Look in the mirror: there you will see the real Bastard.

Thanksgiving Dinner: How NOT to Fry a Turkey

Oct 30th 2009 12:20AM oops...I hadn't watched the ridiculous video first. That's NOT the way to deep fry a turkey (obviously). Most people have better sense. You do need to buy the specific deep fryer meant for it - make sure you use the correct amount of oil...the right size turkey, etc...and take ALL precautions. Geez...this was clearly an accident waiting to happen. Looks like a set up to me...el stupidos :)
