Farewell, Internet

Apr 21st 2011 7:38AM Can't say I'm surprised or sad. Once this blog got sucked into the ugly stepchild called Switched it was the beginning of the end. Although I put most of the blame on the writers. The Download Squad writers were arrogant, argumentative and would basically tell posters, "If you don't like my posts or agree with everything I say, go somewhere else." I know I did and I guess many others did too. Let that be a lesson to not treat your readers/customers with contempt.

Lower Merion, PA school district cleared of Federal spying charges, approves new privacy policies

Aug 18th 2010 7:25AM @xboomer - That is a big part of the problem right now. I live near this district and most of the residents are pissed it happened but realize if the district gets hit with a huge fine, the only way for them to pay for it is to raise taxes. So they will raise taxes on everyone to pay back a smaller number of the same people, and of course the lawyers. It's pretty much a no-win for everyone involved.

Windows Home Server 'Vail' sees new beta release, adds OS X support

Aug 17th 2010 12:36PM @TheRealMikeyG - I'd say you're missing almost all of the goodness. Any server can handle file storage and media streaming. The real goodness is automatic image backups and easy bare metal restores.

Just be aware that Vail does not use standard disk formatting. So if your WHS fails you CAN'T pull the drives and install them in another machine to get access to the data. That's a dealbreaker for me. I'll stick with the current version, which is awesome.

Move-It: the stick-on recyclable cardboard trolley (video)

Aug 12th 2010 12:32PM @wobbles - I'm always amazed that the only place in the US where it did catch on is with soda bottles. Cans are still ounces, but larger ones are 1, 2 & 3 liter.

Impossible Project's color Polaroid film finally going on sale, shipping August 2nd

Jul 30th 2010 2:33PM @Pizzicato - "Since you’re all being so negative" - I see what you did there.

HP's 30-inch ZR30w IPS LCD monitor reviewed: exceptional performance, reasonable price

Jul 28th 2010 8:40AM "I don't need 30", I'd get lost on something that big and my neck would ache" - That's what she said.

A small-time Massachusetts paper is instituting a paywall -- for commenters

Jul 14th 2010 4:30PM @Slappy - You're right about some of the writers on this site. Sebastian Anthony is also particularly sensitive to any critical comments about his posts.

The issue seems to be that the readers believe this site is a quasi-legitimate news source where the writers would welcome critical readers and be humble when mistakes are pointed out. The writers seem to believe it's just a way to get paid to search the web for goofy stuff and post their own opinions, (nice work if you can get it) and if you don't like it then go away.

If a site is willing to be unnecessarily augmentative with its readers and actively encourage them to leave, I would take them up on it. I know I am.

Actual damage from iTunes App Store hacks: only 400 accounts affected

Jul 8th 2010 3:50PM I guess those 400 people "bought" A LOT of books. Judging from the poster Christiaan's experience, the total amount involved could be quite high and that would translate into a lot of false purchases.

Maybe it also shows that not as many books as you think are being bought and a small spike can skew the whole listing.

Transdroid: manage your torrents on the go, with your Android smartphone

Jun 14th 2010 2:06PM "Not that I'm a pirate or anything" - I don't think any of those files in the first screenshot are available as legal torrents.

If you're going to be a pirate at least be honest about it.

Windows Live Sync 2011 offers slick peer-to-peer sync and remote control

Jun 14th 2010 1:58PM So if it doesn't sync with the cloud does that mean that both machines need to be on at the same time for the sync to work? You mean I need to leave my home machine on all day just in case I want to sync a file from work with it? That's a pretty annoying restriction.
