Mar 24th 2007 1:21AM The main thing that is legislated IS morality (a.k.a., ethics). There are very few major civil and criminal laws that are not about morality - really. So, indeed you can legislate and most often do legislate morality. Perhaps the only valid interpretation of "you can't legislate morality" is the idea that even though you can pass a law, you can't make everyone follow it. You can try.
Interestingly while most mainline religions today do not allow polygamy, many once did. The older the religion, the less chance any of the sacred writings prohibit polygamy. For example, in old testament times it was not uncommon nor is it banned in the Old or New Testaments. Most religions have outlawed it, as have many countries. I think it's a good thing to ban ... what man really wants to have more than one boss?
How does this affect the UNLV player? It shouldn't directly. His father's mistake isn't his fault.
It may well affect his father and rightly so. He chose to have two wives even though it is against the law in the state where he lives (and in this and most countries). Those that are concerned for his family ... while a nice sentiment, it's not something the father was concerned enough about not to do.
