Daily DIY: AstroTurf It!

Turf in style this season... Photo: Readymade Mag

Summer may be long gone, but I'm still allowed to dream of astroturf, right? Especially after seeing this lovely DIY AstroTurf couch in a recent ReadyMade mag issue. The perfect outdoor seating would look just as smashing on a front porch or sunroom, and I'm half tempted to strike a deal with the husband -- if he helps me build an AstroTurf couch, I'll let him use the leftovers for his very own backyard golf course. Good deal, right?

And you know what? Turns out I don't even need his help to build it! The instructions couldn't be easier:

1.
Take removable cushions off of the sofa. Lay AstroTurf down on the sofa and cut into pieces just large enough to cover each area with a slight overlap.
2.
Using the staple gun, attach AstroTurf, stretching as you go for a snug fit. You don't need to cover the bottom of the sofa, but try not to leave any gaps where water might seep in.
3.
Cover removable cushions separately.

Super fun, right? So excited to try it!

Daily DIY: De-Scuff Your Leather Couch

dog, couch, leather

Fido can relax on the couch as long as he'd like with this handy tip! Photo: Canine Supply Info

Good news and bad news. The good news is your newly-adopted wheaton terrier has officially adjusted to your household and feels right at home. The bad news? Your newly-adopted wheaton terrier is officially adjusted to your household and feels right at home. On your couch. Your newly-adopted leather couch, to be exact. Don't fret. Dig through your kid's backpack to find a quick fix for those unsightly scuffs.

Curious? The eraser of a pencil will cause that scuff mark to virtually disappear right before your eyes! Another reason why back-to-school is sometimes the happiest time on earth.

Bonus? You can also use the eraser of a brand new pencil to clean an LCD monitor or computer monitor, as well! Be sure to rub lightly and use a clean eraser, as graphite marks on the eraser can cause additional scratching to the monitor.

Who knew your new favorite cleaning solvent would rest in your child's classroom?

Grow a grass couch

grass couch by Ready Made magazineOrganic furniture is all the rage. Tree stump benches and natural outdoor spaces fill the pages of the most popular home decorating magazines.

How far would you take this? Consider building an outdoor seating area complete with a grass arm-chair and couch. Styleo points us to a tutorial in the print version of Ready Made magazine, which outlines the steps. Working together with nature to create these inspired pieces of organic furniture is the perfect way to reunite your green thumb with your inner diva.

Basically, you pot soil into a chair frame, then plant the grass seed. After about 10 days, the grass will start to grow. When it reaches about 10cm long, you're ready to cut it down and reveal the chair design. You'll have to maintain it regularly if you want to avoid sitting in an overgrown mess. Remember, with all the maintenance, consider using a non-pollutant mower, and minimize your water usage.

There has been a comment that the tutorial is not easy to follow. I think this basic concept would lend itself to any number of design modification, so use it as inspiration, and see where it takes you.

Sleek, stylish, and environmentally progressive, you will definitely be the talk of the town (either as "Check out their cool lawn couch!" or "Who is that nut down the road with a chair made out of grass?").

Ikeahacker's Best of 2007

Console table with recycled legs, by Erika Chapin and family, from ikeahacker.blogspot.comIKEAhacker, the site that tells you how to take inexpensive, design-friendly flat-pack furniture and change it up to suit your needs and style, wants you to vote on the best IKEAhack of 2007.

Here are a few projects that I like:

But everything else is cool, too. Voting ends on January 15th, so pop over and give it a look! At the moment, the remodeled guest bathroom and Marcus's turtle terrarium are fighting it out for first place, with everything else lagging. Can your votes make the difference?

Repurpose that old couch

If you've had your sofa (couch, whatever) for quite a bit of time, chances are you are at least a little attached to it. Instead of plunking down five benjamins (or a grand or more) on a new couch and starting a new relationship in that living room, have you ever thought about performing some handiwork on that love-of-your-life couch you already have?

There are many ways to get that old and lovable living room centerpiece up to snuff. Yeah, slipcovers can be easy and quick (and can look fantastic), but if that external fabric is in okay condition, have you tried stuffing the cushions and armpieces with new poly stuffing? How about down-filled sofa cushions? If you've never experienced comfort from down stuffing, you'll be in love -- trust me.

But there are more ways to revitalize that old buddy. If you like the style but would prefer a more up-to-date fabric, how about stripping and re-applying a fabric covering for the entire couch? Microfiber and chenille fabrics are all the rage these days, and they probably did not exist 15 years ago when you last purchased living room furniture. And yes -- there's more. If you're handy and patient, you can even add metal studs to the arms and back of that old sofa to give it new life. Want more? How about some legs for that sofa to show off?
