Decorate notebooks for back to school

cupcake notebook decorated with scrapbooking materialsNotebooks are a necessity for school, but your kids may not get excited about the plain white paper and solid-colored cover. Sure, they are likely to plaster the front of their notebooks with the likes of "I [heart] David Archuleta 4-eva'," but why not suggest a venture slightly more creative than that?

There are some fun ways kids can decorate their notebooks for back-to-school, and make them uniquely theirs. For instance, using spare scrapbooking supplies, your kids can make their notebooks fit their favorite theme, whether that be cupcakes or super heroes.

Or, get some stencils, gel and glitter pens, and construction paper to embellish those notebooks and unleash those kids into a decorating frenzy.

A project like this one could go in so many directions; only time and creativity are the factors. So let your kids use the backs of their notebooks for their love graffiti, and proudly show off their artwork on the front covers.

Duct tape back pack

duct tape backpackStep aside, Hannah Montana! There's a way cooler backpack in town...

As a parent, it's hard buying "branded" merchandise, isn't it? I don't want my son walking around advertising the latest Spiderman movie, and I sure wouldn't want Hannah Montana's face plastered all over my hypothetical daughter's backpack.

In the interest of promoting individuality and all things unique, why not send your child to school with a duct tape backpack... handmade by you, with some kid help, of course!

You know it will be strong -- it's duct tape, after all -- and you can customize the outside colors by using any colored duct tape you can find.

You'll need cardboard, gray and colored duct tape, and some string, shoelace-style. Before you know it, your child will be starting his or her own new trend... you may need a lot of duct tape very soon!

Build a bird bath with found items

goldfinch in bird bath

Attracting birds to your yard can bring so much enjoyment. They are so much fun to watch, and my son loves naming the different types he sees at our birdfeeder -- goldfinch, robin, sparrow, blue jay....

We've shown you how to build a bird house with scrap wood; now I'll share some ideas on how to build a bird bath with materials you may have around the house.

You could use some chicken wire and cement for the bath part, some metal for the support post, and rocks for the edges, suggests Las Pilitas. Or how about an old cake pan, an old garbage can lid, or even a beat-up hubcap? If those are too crazy for you, a soft, flat rock or even a terra cotta pot's saucer will make an effective birdbath.

Build an owl house

screech owl in a tree

Why on Earth would you want to build an owl house? Having owls take up residence on your property will cause the mouse population to dwindle: never a bad thing if the furry invaders like to live in your basement, attic, or -- yikes! -- your kitchen.

To build a screech owl house, you'll need ten feet of one-foot board, some hinges, nails, and screws, wood glue, and a little time. Research shows that owls like big houses with small entrance holes, which is what inspired this owl house plan from Audubon. They suggest hanging your owl house ten feet off the ground or higher.

You are now on your way to a mouse-free house! Similarly, if you'd like to see a few less mosquitoes, try building a bat house. Apparently, those buzzing buggers are quite delicious....

Homemade water sprinkler

diamond-shaped sprinkler made from PVC pipesMake a sprinkler? Why on earth would you do that when you can go out to just about any store and grab a cheap one for less than ten dollars?

I'll tell you why:
  • You could be reusing waste materials from other projects to make your sprinkler.
  • It's an easy and fun project you could even do with the kids.
  • Speaking of kids, you could make an impressive play sprinkler for them to romp about in.
  • You could create a system that would water your entire lawn.
OK, so maybe you can't do the whole project with the kids (unless yours are old enough to help drill holes), but you can work with them to plan an elaborate sprinkler that will entertain them on hot summer days.

Make gifts for your bridesmaids

elegant bracelet

It's getting close to your big day. You've done everything you can to keep your wedding plans simple and frugal. You've made your own invitations, created centerpieces yourself, made your bouquet and even your guest book.

Now, how will you thank your bridesmaids? In keeping with your frugal DIY wedding, a thoughtful and unique hand-made gift sounds perfect.

Spa products
Wouldn't it be fun to have a spa day with your bridesmaids? Since this is an expensive luxury, you could thank them with some homemade spa products instead. Try some of these:
  • Facial products: Make a cleanser, scrub, mask, and moisturizer to pamper your bridesmaids.
  • Foot products: Create a soak, scrub, and butter -- those feet will be worn out from dancing at the wedding!
  • Body products: Make bath salts, body scrub, hand scrub, and body oil, so she can be soft all over.

Build a "Jungle Cruise" playhouse, Disney-style

jungle themed playhouseMy three-year-old loves playhouses. Even if it's really just a cardboard box that he can fit into, it qualifies as the coolest toy in the northern hemisphere.

In fact, we have finally found the right plans to fit our yard, and we plan on building a playhouse for our fanciful child soon. We were actually steering clear of themed playhouses, so that Owen could let his imagination run wild; knowing him, it will be everything from a firehouse to the Hall of Justice.

If you have a little one who adores Disney's many jungle-themed rides and movies, though, this may be just the playhouse for you to try building.

The many creative uses for retired PC's

computer caseSo you thought that once a PC was retired from data service it just went to the junk heap to be melted down and reincarnated as a Wii controller? Well, that's not what happens all the time. Some computers and their peripherals get a full make over and go on with their lives in the form of something new. Have you ever heard of a computer mouse turned Chia pet? Well, believe it or not, I found one.

A hilarious if not artsy gallery of images resides over at Techlicious.tv , and I'll bet that you will be greatly amused with what you find there. The creations displayed are made from the parts of computers just like the one you might have sitting on your desk. The best part might be that these projects all look like just about anyone could make them if given the right tools and glue. Take a look at the video display which was converted into a hamster cage. Now there's some ingenuity for you!

I guarantee it will be worth your time to take a little look. My favorite entry in the whole group would have to be the tower case hibachi. Please feel free to tell us about PC reincarnations that you have created and tell us how you go about building these things!

Build your own super hero, Pow!

Hero Machine screen capture
Have you ever been caught in a sticky situation and wished that a super hero would come to the rescue? Not to worry folks, now you can make your own super hero online and have them ready to serve you at a moment's notice. Under Ground Online has made it easy for you to assemble the component parts which will give you a really cool looking super hero character portrait. Granted, it's only a picture of a super hero but it's your own creation and perhaps even an extension of your ego.

You can choose male or female, human or mutation. You get to choose their entire outfit, piece by piece. You even get to give them awesome side arms and other weapons. What you can't do is make a replica of a well known super hero which already exists. Well, you can make a replica but that would be naughty.

All you aspiring cartoonists out there owe it to yourself to take a trip to Hero Machine 2.5 to give it a try. It's easy, it's fun and if you get hit with a mega dose of gamma rays while you're working on your super hero creation, perhaps the attributes you have chosen shall be transmuted into your DNA making you into a real super hero... but probably not.

Make yourself a giant Halloween sandwich

yummy sandwich pictureThe hunt has already begun for the coolest, most fun and interesting Halloween costumes. In my experience, the best costumes fall into two categories, either quite expensive or homemade. I recently came across instructions for creating a costume that will really turn heads because of its unique appeal.

The giant Halloween sandwich costume will take a little work to create but the results should be well worth the effort and the best part is that you can make it yourself.
