Your front yard doesn't have to be perfectly manicured or professionally landscaped to look good. It is, however, your public face -- of sorts. Plus, your neighbors are forced to look at whatever you put out there!

Be a good neighbor: banish the following items from your front yard.

1. Plastic foliage. I'm talking anything you got from a craft store. Like this, for example. Plastic ivy. Faux dried sunflowers. Silk chrysanthemums. Plastic wreaths. Fake autumn leaves strung into streamers. Shudder.

Plastic flowers are tacky in the garden. They're unnecessary. After all, you have Mother Nature at your disposal! Why choose fake flowers? Finally, they evoke the cemetery. Enough said.

I know, I know, you're hearing about the green movement everywhere, and it's even more prevalent now that the gas prices have risen sky-high. You want to do your part, but sometimes it's hard to know where to begin.

You want to start where it will do the most good and save you the most money, right? Green Home has put together a table that can help you figure out the best ways for you to go green.

It's perfectly fitting that the Slow Food movement began in Italy... land of wine, cheese, and meals made from fresh, simply prepared, wholesome ingredients. Though slow food is actually about practices that were in place long before now, the movement itself is fairly new.

Carlo Petrini founded the slow food movement in the mid-1980s after staging a protest against the building of a new McDonald's near the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Aptly named, slow food is in direct opposition to fast food culture. Though I doubt you'll ever find Petrini scarfing down a Big Mac, the fast food that slow food advocates against isn't only found in restaurants. Instead, they encourage a culture where:

• food is grown locally and eaten in season
• heirloom varieties of plant foods are grown and preserved
• meals are based on local culinary traditions
• there is education about the pitfalls of agribusiness and factory farming
• family farms are preserved
• food is grown organically
• animals are ethically raised and processed.

The group has about 83,000 members in 120 countries right now, but the principles behind the slow food movement are gaining ground every day. If this kind of lifestyle interests you, I'll tell you how to get started after the break.

We love solar powered stuff here at DIY Life. Hacking things together ourselves in the interest of reducing our environmental footprint really gets us going. This DIY solar lantern is just the thing to keep the spirit of Earth Day even after it's come and gone.

I live north of Atlanta, Georgia, an area currently under homeowner outdoor watering restrictions. Not much is allowed because of a lingering drought. In addition to trying to do my part to conserve water, I want to be able to water my plants, without waiting for Mother Nature to send the rain. I liked Dan Chilton's article on rain barrels, but I wanted to do something a bit different. I built my barrel in about two hours and it's now the repository for all my recycled water and rainfall, such as it is.

Peruse the gallery, follow the construction steps, and you can be the proud owner of your very own rain barrel and, might I say, the envy of your neighbors.

I live about 20 minutes north of Atlanta. For some time, and particularly since last October, we have been in the midst of a severe drought condition; although the condition has slightly abated, we are still faced with extreme, some would say draconian (look it up -- it'll be your word of the day), water restrictions -- in essence, pretty much all homeowner outdoor watering is prohibited.

Although some slight relief from the ban is expected in the coming months, thanks to winter rains, we are all going to have to reduce our water consumption so that we have something to drink next Summer. To that end, here are some suggestions; some you've seen and a number, I'll wager, you haven't.

But first, some visuals.

My fabulous new laptop is all set up and running beautifully. My old laptop has been consigned to its temporary new home: the garage. There it shall stay until I get an opportunity to take it to an electronics collection event, which my city periodically holds. (It's the green way, people.)

Anyway, I may have been a bit hasty taking it straight to the garage. According to stuff I've been reading online, you should always retire your old computer. That is, before you toss it, recycle it, sell it, give it away, donate it to charity--whatever--it's recommended you carry out some basic steps first.

The following computer retirement tips come courtesy of everyone's favorite software behemoth, Microsoft:

Yesterday we talked about going green in the bathroom and the many ways that we can reduce our water consumption. It is suggested that we switch to low-flush toilets. This is probably the most recommended solution, and many cities even offer credits and rebates toward the purchase.

Ultimately, the goal is to go green, so can the same result be achieved with the old toilet while avoiding a new purchase -- and its inevitable end in the landfill? Yes, it can, thanks to this article teaching us how to convert any toilet into a low flush toilet.

The conversion is dead simple. All you do is fill a half gallon container part way with pebbles or other heavy material, then top it off with water. Put the jug in your toilet tank, where it will displace the water. You'll save a half gallon of water per flush. That's a significant savings in each household; just imagine if your neighbors got on board too! Have a read through the full instructions and the helpful tips, then pass it on to a friend.

I don't know where you live, but here we're already getting spring weather, which means a blistering summer isn't far off. What does this mean in my home? A constantly running air conditioner. To help out with the energy bill, we have ceiling fans in every room but the kitchen and the bathrooms. This allows us to run the thermostat a bit warmer and the savings on the electrical bill really build up.

If you aren't already maxed out with ceiling fans yet, this is the time to do it. Although I'll provide you with this link for installing a new ceiling fan, let me go over some of your choices when you go shopping.

Ceiling fans are a lot like sinks or faucets – you can spend as much as you want to depending on the fanciness and the bells and whistles. I just recently retired the fan in the living room and installed a new one. I bought a model that has lights bundled with it. That old "killing two birds with one stone" thing. I also bought an extra down-rod since we've got a vaulted ceiling. Don't do what I did, though. I relied on the chart on the wall at Home Depot telling which length to use. I had to go back for a shorter one; the first one would have guaranteed me a haircut!

So, get ready for the summer now. There are many models out there so you won't have any problem finding one to fit the your room's motif .

In my ongoing mission to conserve energy (and thereby lower my electricity bill), I'm always looking for ways to tweak my energy efficiency. Some of these cost money initially, but my favorites are the ones that are almost free. Check this one out.

My garage/wood shop is of the attached-to-the-house variety as I described in the recent walk-in-pantry article. Because of the way the house is located, the exterior brick wall gets a lot of afternoon sun, which is quite fierce in the summer. The bricks absorb the heat and relay it into the garage. And of course, it used to make the AC work very hard to cool the kitchen area.

My solution? I attached some lattice to the brick and planted some English ivy in a 10" terracotta pot at the base of it. It really likes the lattice and had not issues with climbing up it. It's also starting to spread to the non-lattice area by setting its creepers into the mortar. I did this about three years ago; it's not an instant fix. But once it takes off, it acts as a natural insulator and really looks great!

Linoleum is back...with a new name: Marmoleum. Linoleum's newfound popularity stems partly from its cool colors and patterns. It's also a relatively eco-friendly flooring choice, because it's made from natural substances like linseed oil, wood flour, and jute. (Mmm. Smells like middle school art class...) Manufacturer, Forbo, also touts the fact that linoleum is non-toxic, biodegradable and hypoallergenic. Marmoleum's massive color selection, running the gamut from classic neutral to exhilaratingly vibrant, has attracted tons of attention as well in the past couple years. What's cool is there is even a Marmoleum option for DIY'ers. It's called Marmoleum Click, and it's sold in the form of interlocking tiles. Click comes in both square and rectangular sizes, and Forbo's website provides very detailed information on how to measure and install this stuff. There are basically two big advantages to going with Click. One: installation is do-able for those with lower or moderate DIY skills. (Yay!) Two: you can be as creative as all get-out in planning your new floor, combining colors and patterns to your heart's content.

A couple caveats: Click color choices are much more limited than for regular Marmoleum. Also, (as with all DIY flooring adventures) you're going to need an absolutely level surface on your existing floor or installation will be a nightmare. Repeat: a nightmare.

When tech geeks meet greenies, strange new gadgets are inevitably born. That's the case with the extremely unusual little New York startup company, Botanicalls. For a fee, the Botanicalls team -- all clad in pristine white lab coats, of course -- will provide you with an assortment of nice houseplants. Try as you might to kill them through the usual means of benign neglect, over-watering or too little/too much sunlight, you will not succeed. Why? Botanicalls plants come with sensors that alert you to their needs via automated telephone calls. I swear I am not making this up! Even Very Serious News giant Reuters did a story on it.

Anyway, for those who want a DIY equivalent, the Botanicalls people were kind enough to supply how-to instructions for a device that sends you Twitter alerts from your plant. These are really detailed instructions, I might add, with lots of great photos. Definitely a great project if you have computer savvy, wiring know-how and soldering skills. You do, right?

Using a old computer keyboard you can make a thin sleeve to protect your CD or DVD from damage. Inside computer keyboards is a thin, flexible, and sturdy membrane with printed circuits on it. Older keyboards tend to have prettier colors and designs in my experience. If you have upgraded to a USB keyboard or one with a bunch of fancy function keys and can not find a taker for your old keyboard grab a small screwdriver and see what's inside.

Making a few sleeves like this could be combined to make a CD wallet. Adding a "jacket" made from an old 5¼ inch floppy diskette gives the newer disc even more protection and also makes your CD protection quite similar to the old familiar albums.

I've written about furoshiki here several times in the last few months. How can you not love them? They bring traditional Japanese style into the 21st century with an eco-friendly bonus: you can avoid using throwaways like paper gift wrap or plastic carrying bags by wrapping something beautifully in a versatile, re-usable cloth. Recently, I came across a furoshiki bag style I've never seen before. I think it's so nifty that I have to share it!

Watch the video above to see what I'm talking about. It involves two cloths that have been stacked as two layers, then sewn together with stitches in the shape of a plus sign. Each row of stitches is halfway across one side, so the lines of stitches intersect at the center of the cloths and divide the stack into quadrants. Each quadrant is a small pocket, formed by the two layers of cloth, with open outer edges and a free corner point.

This furoshiki style is simple to tie: you can see it in the video, but I'll also describe it after the break. However, to get it to look just like the video's results, you need a cloth that has been dyed in a specific way, and if you're going to create your own cloth that isn't dyed that way or stitch together two existing furoshiki, scarves, or bandannas, there are some points to consider.
