Last week we kept busy with low-key sick day activities, and thankfully, we've recovered and are itching to get outside.

My boys are curious, and with that comes endless questioning about the world around them. If your usual walking path is losing its luster, and you're getting tired of questions about the same rotten log, it might be time to mix it up a little. I've gathered together some crafts that celebrate nature and use materials found in their environment.

After the break, I'll share some of these nature-based activities and crafts that will cater to their outdoor interests.

Fairies or (faeries) are mythical creatures with wings and often, supernatural powers. Interestingly, though fairies are often thought to be tiny, innocent, and typically feminine, folklore has it that fairies were often known to be mischievous or even malicious.

Either way, modern fairies are often associated with nature and are pretty popular right now, both with children (think Tinkerbell) as well as older kids, teens, and adults. Chances are that if you don't already have a doll house hanging around your attic or playroom, you can get your hands on one at a garage sale or rummage sale for a few dollars or less.

Once you do, you can spend an afternoon converting that plastic plaything into a fairy fantasy land. All you need is some gray or brown spray paint, a hot glue gun, and then an assortment of natural materials of your choosing. It's bound to thrill the fairy fanatic in your life!

Spring is here and so are the April showers. The leaves are budding on the trees and the grass is starting to green. It is finally time to get the kids out of the house and take them on a nature walk.

Children are natural-born explorers, and it is such a joy to see their little faces light up when they find a unique rock or leaf. When you take them on their hunt for treasures this spring, take along a nature can for them to put their treasures in.

Megan informs us how to take an empty oatmeal container and glue fabric to it, decorate the container, and then add a strap so our little nature buddies can easily tote it around.

We are almost done with our oatmeal container and will definitely recycle it into a nature can for my daughter. She loves to walk around our yard and collect cool rocks, leaves and sticks. It will be a fun way to teach her about all the wonderful things the great outdoors has to offer, right under her little feet.

Leave the harsh food-colorings and egg decorating kits on the shelf. This Easter try something new and natural: dye your Easter eggs with natural coloring.

This handy table lists the various ways that you can achieve rich natural colors. Complete with a description of the color along with mixture and setting instructions, you'll be ready to make your own dyes.

Boiled onion skins for example, will give a deep yellow/gold coloring. A blue/teal color is derived from chopped red cabbage and vinegar, while simmering an egg in grape juice will give you a blue/purple stain.

Canned produce results in a lighter color, while adding vinegar deepens the pigment. Setting times vary among dying agents so keep the table on hand for reference. Make sure you leave extra time for your project because some colors require overnight setting.

Making natural dyes isn't just a way to achieve more earthy colors, and better looking eggs, but a fun challenge for your holiday weekend.

LEAVE IT ALONE
1. Leave it standing. If it's not a danger to people or structures on your property, of course. Let it be a home for birds, bugs and assorted critters.
2. Leave it standing and turn it into yard art -- hang colored bottles from the branches or string it with colored lights that change with the season.

CUT IT UP
3. Use planks for fencing.
4. Build a big brush pile, which is a fantastic refuge for wildlife.
5. Use it for garden mulch. You will need to hire a mulching machine or mulching service for this, however.

What table would be complete without handmade Thanksgiving place mats to wow your guests? Since place mats can be very expensive, you can get the kids involved in making place mats that the guests can take home, if they so choose.

Decorating with elements of nature is all the rage. Pottery Barn does it. Home and Garden Television does it. Better Homes and Garden does it too, and that is the look from which I drew my inspiration this week.

As part of their "Inspired Fall Decorating" slide show, Better Homes and Gardens (BH&G) includes a fun way to showcase some favorite photos, naturally.

When you live in the woods like I do, it is an easy look to duplicate.

I gathered some twigs from the yard, and also some evergreen twigs. BH&G Uses red berries, but I chose the evergreen look. They tied theirs with twine, I opted for some muted gold raffia ribbon.

Add a few black and white photos and the beauty and simplicity of nature creates an elegant photo display.

What is your favorite way to decorate with nature?

OK, we don't want to pick on Pottery Barn, really we don't. Honestly, I love them, we do purchase their products and I obviously look for decorating inspiration from them.

But 59.00 for a candleholder?

Granted, the twig design is very stylish, bringing the nature theme indoors and all.

I, however, decided to take it one step further, for free, of course. Instead of the twigs made of metal on the Pottery Barn hurricane, I decided to try a similar look with a pillar candle, a metal stand and -- you guessed it -- real twigs.

It was simple, and if you've got a pine tree, you can get similar twigs. It may not be a fancy hurricane, but it echoes the look -- for free -- and brings nature to your table.

Here's a unique idea for a simple bird feeder that I learned about when I owned my feed store. It's a great project for the kids and a wonderful opportunity to discuss animals and nature with them. It's a fun and moderately messy way to keep a few kids busy doing something worth while.
