Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, is an additional policy that covers healthcare costs and services that are not offered under Original Medicare. Essentially, these plans are there to “fill the gaps” in your Medicare coverage
If you are covered under Original Medicare and are not covered by any other type of health insurance—including Medicare Advantage—you are eligible for a Medicare Supplement plan.
To apply for a Medicare Supplement plan, you must already have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B, which cover hospital care as well as the medical procedures and other in-patient services your doctor provides.
Private insurance companies in each state underwrite a range of Medicare Supplement plans. Plans cover outpatient medical expenses, including co-pays, deductibles, and emergency health care services accessed outside of the United States.
Standard Medigap plans are designated as A through N, each of which covers different aspects of healthcare and may vary from state to state.
