History. The University of Stellenbosch Business School was founded in 1964, enrolling 14 MBA students. Four years later the first DBA degree was conferred. In 1981 the current premises in Bellville, northern Cape Town, was acquired and five years later the department relocated from Stellenbosch to the Bellville Park Campus.

Early life and education. Ackermann was born on 14 January 1934 in Pretoria in the former Transvaal. Both of his parents were Afrikaners, but he was raised bilingual. He matriculated from Pretoria Boys High School in 1950 and attended Stellenbosch University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in law in 1953.
It is the third oldest South African university in continuous operation, after the University of Cape Town (founded in 1829), and Stellenbosch University (founded in 1866). Eight years later, in 1904, the school was moved to Johannesburg and renamed the Transvaal Technical Institute.
