General Dynamics UK is the British subsidiary of the American defence and security corporation General Dynamics. Founded in London in 1962, the company has grown to include eight sites across the United Kingdom , including in Bristol , Chippenham , Hastings , Merthyr Tydfil , Oakdale and Rotherham .
In February 21, 1952, the Electric Boat Company was reorganized as General Dynamics Corporation under John Jay Hopkins, thus ending the Electric Boat Company. General Dynamics continued to build submarines for the US Navy. Under General Dynamics, a series of nuclear-powered submarines were built, starting with the first the USS Nautilus .
In March 2016, the U.S. Navy announced that General Dynamics Electric Boat was chosen as the prime contractor and lead design yard. On 5 February 1942, the US Navy purchased the former Groton Iron Works property from Alfred Holter and Shell Oil Company for $222,000 using condemnation proceedings. [1] $9.5 million was spent to construct the Victory Yard, where General Dynamics Electric Boat began building submarines on 22 July 1942. [2]
