General Dynamics Corporation (GD) is an American publicly traded aerospace and defense corporation headquartered in Reston, Virginia. As of 2020, it was the fifth-largest defense contractor in the world by arms sales, and fifth largest in the United States by total sales. The company is a Fortune 100 company, and was ranked No. 94 in 2022.
General Atomics was founded on July 18, 1955, in San Diego, California, by Frederic de Hoffmann with assistance from notable physicists Edward Teller and Freeman Dyson. The company was originally part of the General Atomic division of General Dynamics "for harnessing the power of nuclear technologies".
Sycamore Canyon Test Facility. Coordinates: 32°53′48″N 117°3′24″W. Sycamore Canyon Test Facility is a rocket and weapons test site located east of MCAS Miramar in northern San Diego, in Scripps Ranch. A number of weapons contractors have had facilities at the site including Lockheed-Martin, Hughes Aircraft and General Dynamics.
General Atomics. In 1986, Blue and his brother Neal Blue purchased General Atomics, a San Diego-based nuclear physics and defense contractor that had been founded by General Dynamics in 1955 "for the purpose of harnessing the power of nuclear technologies for the benefit of mankind". General Dynamics had then sold the firm to Gulf.
San Diego officially became part of the U.S. in 1848, and the town was named the county seat of San Diego County when California was granted statehood in 1850. It remained a very small town for several decades, but grew rapidly after 1880 due to development and the establishment of multiple military facilities.
