General Dynamics traces its ancestry to John Philip Holland's Holland Torpedo Boat Company. [5] In 1899, Isaac Rice bought the company from Holland and renamed it Electric Boat Company. The company was founded by electrical inventor William Woodnut Griscom in 1880. An important early customer for electric boat motors was the Electric Launch Company, also known as Elco.
