In 1893, three sisters from Mercy Hospital in Davenport, Iowa founded a hospital in Des Moines, IA. Their first location was Hoyt Sherman Place and in 1899 Mercy Hospital Training School was established. This evolved into Mercy School of Health Sciences, from which Mercy College of Health Sciences was established in downtown Des Moines in 1995.
Ebenezer Cook died October 7, 1871. [2] Clarissa C. (Bryan) Cook was born August 4, 1811, in Sydney, Delaware County, New York, and died February 19, 1879. She was a daughter of Fowler P. and Lucretia Bryan. She was known for carrying out the wishes of her husband and their philanthropy to the City of Davenport and the Episcopal Church.
Davenport was established in 1836 by Antoine LeClaire and named after his good friend Colonel George Davenport. The first settlers of Davenport were mostly Germans. After a county seat dilemma with neighboring town Rockingham in 1840, Davenport was established as the county seat of Scott County.
