Postal rates to 1847. Initial United States postage rates were set by Congress as part of the Postal Service Act signed into law by President George Washington on February 20, 1792. The postal rate varied according to "distance zone", the distance a letter was to be carried from the post office where it entered the mail to its final destination.
Stampless letters, paid for by the receiver, and private postal systems, were gradually phased out after the introduction of adhesive postage stamps, first issued by the U.S. government post office July 1, 1847, in the denominations of five and ten cents, with the use of stamps made mandatory in 1855.
Next month, on Jan. 21, 2024, the price of some Postal Service mail will increase. Forever stamp prices will rise from 66 cents to 68 cents.
The forever stamp rate has been at 55 cents since Jan. 27, 2019. The price will hold steady even as other postage rates increase by up to 1.8% in late January 2021.
The U.S. Postal Service is planning to raise postage costs for a second time this year on July 14 with the price of a first-class stamp rising to 73 cents from 68 cents.
