In 1893, when he was 18 years old, Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr. began working as a salesman for W.L. Weller & Sons.He became co-owner fifteen years later. In 1910 they acquired the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, which had started as a sour mash whiskey distillery in 1872.
In roughly 1883, he relocated J. M. Atherton Company headquarters to Whiskey Row, Louisville on 125 W Main St., [18] but the distillery in Athertonville continued to be owned by the Atherton family until 1899. When the company moved to Louisville, Peter Lee Atherton became the Vice President and general manager. [19]
The Colorado-based bar and entertainment company purchased the old the W.L. Weller building at 121 W. Main St. for $3.65 million in spring 2021.
