LMS diesel shunter 7057, later to become NCC Class 22, was built by Harland & Wolff. Testing started in July 1934 and the locomotive was taken into LMS stock in February 1935. It was loaned to the War Department between 1941-1943, which numbered it 233. [1]
Design and Operation. The 5 Class were built to replace elderly 0-4-0 tender locomotives on a number of freight lines which featured sharp curves and steep gradients. Number 5 was allocated to Greenock (Princes Pier) shed for dock shunting, whereas the other two were allocated to Ardrossan shed for colliery branches in the Kilwinning and Dalry area.

History. The Class D5 0-6-0 was the final development of the Furness Railway six-coupled goods engine. The class utilised the standardised 4-foot-7 + 1 ⁄ 2-inch (1.410 m) wheels and 18-by-26-inch (457 mm × 660 mm) cylinders of which W. F. Pettigrew had become a great proponent.

Renumbered 11456 by the LMS in 1923. It was sold to Blainscough Colliery in 1937. It was then purchased for preservation from the NCB in 1967 by the L&Y Saddletank Fund, later called the L&Y Railway Preservation Society. It was moved from the colliery to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in November 1971 and first steamed in May 1972.
In terms of locomotive taxonomy, the LMS had a tendency to lump classes together (e.g. Sentinels, diesel shunters, ex-Midland 0-4-4Ts), but for clarity these have been split into subclasses where appropriate. NB: This list is currently under construction. The power classification given is the LMS power classification.
