In 1956, the United States, Canada, and Mexico came to an agreement with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Automobile Manufacturers Association and the National Safety Council that standardized the size for license plates for vehicles (except those for motorcycles) at 6 inches (15 cm) in height by 12 inches (30 cm) in width, with standardized mounting holes. [3]
Before 1980 the plates for private vehicles were white-on-black (front and rear) and had up to five digits following the code SD. Royal vehicles had the code S, and government vehicles had the code GSD.
The license plates were in black with digits and the name of the province/town in white. Surviving vehicles from the period may use the original license plates. Only a handful of such vehicles exist today. From 1 April 1913 to 31 March 1971 only a single letter was used on Norwegian vehicle license plates.
