He was CEO of Burlington Northern Railroad from 1985 to 1995, and joined Delta's board of directors in 1987. He became CEO of Delta in 2004, a time of financial crisis for the airline.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Washburn University in 1923 where he was a member of the Kansas Beta Chapter of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In 1922 he was inducted with five other juniors into the school's prestigious Sagamore Society. From Washburn he went to the University of Chicago where he earned a doctorate in economics.
